Sustainability efforts at UC Santa Barbara took another giant step forward this week with the formal dedication of the new solar array on the roof of Parking Structure 22.

Chancellor Henry T. Yang, Nobel laureate Alan Heeger and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Michael Young were among those who spoke at the event. Also appearing were Gaucho alums Clayton Carlson and Michael Hewitt, who came up with the original idea for the renewal energy project in 2010 while they were students at UCSB.

The student-led photovoltaic project is expected to generate about 425 kilowatts of electricity, which is more than enough to power the nearby Student Resource Building.
