AMG achieved a major milestone this week on the Mammoth Lakes Civic Center. A topping out ceremony was held on site Tuesday, May 13th. The practice of “topping out” can be traced back to the ancient Scandinavian cultural and religious ceremony. The reference comes from placing a tree atop a new building, typically at its highest point. Doing so also served a functional purpose as builders would use the tree to gauge the timing of enclosing a timber building. Once the pine needles had fallen off the tree, the builder knew the wood frame had cured/dried out sufficiently to move onto the next phase of the construction process. The Civic Center topping out ceremony was postponed one day from the original planned final beam install on Monday due to high winds. Fittingly, snow began to fall as the final beam was hoisted into place Tuesday.
The Mammoth Lakes Civic Center is a 16,125-sf steel framed building including a council chamber, main entrance lobby, office space for town services, and public areas. Site improvements include new landscaping, concrete, and asphalt paving with ample parking and electric vehicle and accessible parking stalls.
We are grateful to our dedicated construction team, subcontractors, design partners and of course the Town of Mammoth Lakes who all played an integral part in achieving this major milestone.
